Fire Explorers Post

Program Details

The Western Springs Fire Explorers Post 17 is a program for young adults (ages 14-21) who are interested in the exciting career field of firefighting and emergency medical services. The group participates in various drills that encompass both fields. The group is taught at the beginner level by firefighters/paramedics. We meet bi-weekly on Wednesday nights from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Activities & Participation

The Explorers drills consist of various firefighting and EMS activities such as


· Search and rescue

· Ladders

· The use of tools on the fire ground

· Hose advancements

· Sprinkler systems

· Fire behavior and building construction


· Lifting and moving patients

· Basic wound care

The Explorers also assist in Fire department events such as:

· Gathering on the green

· Pancake breakfast

· Open house

· Hose testing

Cadet Fire School

& Training

Each year the Explorers get a chance to go down to the Illinois Fire Service Institute at the University of Illinois campus to experience live-fire training and put their skills to the test under real fire conditions. They also get to participate in:

· Vehicle extrication

· Leadership classes

· Forcible entry

· Engine operations

· Truck operations
