Well 5 Construction
Construction of the Well #5 project for the Village of Western Springs was financed by the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (SRF). The SRF program is administered by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and receives a portion of its money to fund these types of projects from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The project includes well drilling, pumping equipment, the electrical building, water transmission to the water treatment plant (WTP), and SCADA valve improvements at the WTP.
Once complete, will improve water quality and water system reliability for residents and businesses in the Village of Western Springs by providing an alternate water supply if one of the other supply wells is taken out of service. SRF programs operate in each state to provide communities the resources necessary to build, maintain, and improve the infrastructure that protects on of our most valuable resources: water.

The project began in early winter of 2018 with the replacement of approximately 100' of sanitary main running north-south through Field Park. The sanitary main adjacent to the proposed well site will be upgraded to potable water quality pipe.
Construction of the new well will begin with the drilling and will commence around July 2019. Drilling is expected to take approximately four months. During this period some overnight work may be required. The "Typical Deep Rotary" drill rig setup consists of the following equipment
- Drill Rig
- Dog House
- Drill Pipe Trailer
- Pump #1 & #2
- Mud System
- Dog House
The new well will facilitate the need for a new transmission main to run from Field Park, east to the Water Treatment Plant located near Johnson Avenue and Hillgrove Avenue. The transmission main work is expected to occur concurrently with the drilling of the new well. Work is anticipated to begin around July 2019 and take approximately 4-6 weeks.
The new main will be mechanically bored near the southern curb line of Hillgrove Avenue. Parking along the south side of Hillgrove Avenue will be temporarily closed while boring is occuring.
Once the drilling of the well is complete, the well pumping equipment and electrical systems will be installed. Work is anticipated to commence during the summer of 2020. The final well site will include a pit-less well design with a small building for the electrical equipment on the site.
