The Western Springs Police Department holds any personal property for six months in an effort to allow the owner ample time to claim their items. Unclaimed property often ranges from jewelry and items of clothing, to bicycles and vehicles. If no owners are located, that property is subsequently picked up by propertyroom.com, an online auction site that partners with municipal agencies to publicly sell unclaimed property.
Police agencies are mandated by statute to auction seized, found, and unclaimed property at public auctions. Propertyroom.com was developed to offset the need for local agencies to host their own sales. Representatives from this organization retrieve the surplus goods from local agencies and auction them nationwide via an online system. Portions of the proceeds are then given back to the local departments once property is sold.
Any questions regarding the property auction process can be directed to the Police Department at 708-246-8540.
