The Village of Western Springs is currently scheduling an emergency sewer repair for a manhole structure at the intersection of 49th Street and Grand Avenue in the Forest Hills subdivision. Approximately two weeks ago the Village discovered a significant structural issue with the storm sewer manhole structure located in the middle of the intersection. Barricades were placed over the structure as a precautionary measure and several inspections were conducted to determine the structural integrity and severity of the damage. The Village has determined the complete replacement of the sewer structure will be required.
The Village is currently waiting for the new pre-cast concrete sewer structure to complete manufacture and we anticipate the work to begin sometime early next week with a third-party contractor, Calumet City Plumbing.
At this time, the Village has placed barricades in the intersection to ensure traffic does not drive over the compromised structure. Once work begins, the Village anticipates that the entire intersection will be inaccessible for several days while work is occurring. Detour signs and barricades will be placed at the adjoining intersections to direct through traffic around the construction area. Thru traffic should detour to adjacent residential streets at 48th Street and 51st Street for east-westbound traffic and to Woodland Avenue and Lawn Avenue for north-southbound traffic.
Residents will still have access to their driveways during this period. The Village also does not anticipate any sidewalk closures at this time, but we will provide notice if the repair warrants any additional closures.
