1. How do I become a paid on-call firefighter?

The Western Springs Fire Department relies heavily upon paid-on-call personnel, who provide this vital service to our community. Potential candidates who are interested in becoming a Western Springs paid on call firefighter, will have to successfully complete an oral interview, background check, and a medical physical. When the candidate successfully completes the phases of the application, they will attend a fire academy for six months. The fire academy will be held at the Western Springs Fire Department.  No experience is required to join us. An orientation meeting will be held at FD headquarters 4353 Wolf Road on August 28, 2018 at 7:30p.m. Interested candidates can find an application here: Job Application

Minimum requirements:

•             Be energetic, committed and physically fit

•             At least 18 years old

•             Must live in or within a mile of the border of Western Springs

2. Who does child seat safety checks and when do they occur?

Child Safety Seat Checks are free to residents only. Western Springs Police Department does car seat checks that take place once monthly. Call Officer Niezgoda or Officer Hull at 708-246-8540 to schedule an appointment.

3. Where do I dispose of my sharps and sharps containers?

4. Where do I dispose of my used fire extinguisher?

6. How do I dispose of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors?

Smoke detectors typically fall within two categories: photoelectric and ionization. It is legal to dispose of photo electric smoke detectors in a trash cart because they are not considered hazardous waste. First, remove the batteries and recycle them properly. Find a battery drop-off location at call2recycle.org/locator.

 

Ionization detectors contain a small amount of Americium 241, a radioactive isotope. When in use, these detectors are perfectly safe, as the radioactive material is shielded by a metal chamber inside the device. If dismantled, however, the radioactive material can become exposed. For this reason, you should never try to take apart an old ionization detector. To determine whether your detector is an ionization type, look on the back; it should either have the letter "I" or say ionization.

 

First Alert has a complimentary disposal program for up to 4 intact ionization smoke detectors (postage not included). These must be First Alert, BRK, Family Gard, or Onelink brand.

 

Curie includes a mail-in label with the purchase of a smoke detector.

 

CO Detectors

Carbon monoxide detectors can be disposed in the trash cart, but first remove the batteries and recycle them properly.

7. How often should I change my smoke detector and my carbon monoxide detector?

On the back of your smoke detector and CO detector there should be an expiration date or a manufactured date. Companies suggest changing the detectors every 7 to 10 years. During those years the companies suggest to change your battery every 6 months. Be sure to test your detector system once a month to make sure things are working properly. 10. How do I obtain a fire or EMS report?

To request a fire or EMS report go to the village website at www,wsprings.com. Then look for the “How Do I” tab. Click on “Submit” category, then click on “FOIA/Public Records Report”.
